Winter Sculling 2023 Round 2

Published Sat 01 Jul 2023

A cross current from the inbound tide on the Yarra River made for slower rowing in Round 2 of the Winter Sculling Handicap series. Seven Power House Rowers braved the conditions and hit the Yarra River to row the 2km race.

As we progress through the series we see the handicappers starting to play with handicaps across the field. Looking to challenge the faster rowers and level the field for the laggards. The handicaps are based on the handicappers' subjective expectations of speed. While there is an attempt to ensure close racing in every heat, the handicaps are not objectively derived. This adds an element of fun for some in 'beating the handicapper', often enough to get ahead on the points table.

Thanks to Catherine and Ross for taking the videos and Ross for compiling yet another great video reel!

There are still four more rounds of the Winter Sculling Handicap series to run. It is important to remember, the winter sculling series is totally volunteer run. If you can't compete, consider volunteering to help out with running the event. To volunteer join the Winter Sculling Facebook page and put your name on the volunteer sheet they post there.
