Round 1 of the Winter Sculling Handicap series was windy and choppy, but Nine Power House Rowers braved the conditions and hit the Yarra River to row the 2km race.
This handicap series allows scullers who are slow to have the fun of being chased, and seeing if they can make it to the finish ahead of the field. While the scullers who are fast have the fun of seeing how many competing sullers they can chase down. The handicaps are based on the handicappers' subjective expectations of speed. While there is an attempt to ensure close racing in every heat, the handicaps are not objectively derived. This adds an element of fun for some in 'beating the handicapper', often enough to get ahead on the points table.
Thanks to Dave for taking the videos and Ross for compiling the great video reel!
There are still five more rounds of the Winter Sculling Handicap series to run. It is important to remember, the winter sculling series is totally volunteer run. If you can't compete, consider volunteering to help out with running the event. To volunteer join the Winter Sculling Facebook page and put your name on the volunteer sheet they post there.
