Rutherglen Rowing Regatta 2024

Published Fri 19 Jan 2024

Phillipa Edgley first learned to row and joined Powerhouse Rowing Club in the 1990s. In 2023 she returned to rowing as a Masters Rower. She reflects on what it is like to return to rowing and racing following over a 20 year break from the sport.

I set my sights on Rutherglen as a nice and easy way to get back into racing. The weekend did not disappoint.

The nerves started from the moment I saw the course. ‘What am I doing here’ was my first thought. But the team spirit I experienced as I jumped in the mixed quad and four (with Nige, Brendon, and Catherine), in the double (with Brenton), and in the female quad and four (with Wag, Catherine and Peta) trumped any nerves about me not being in the right place!
My technique was undeniably rough but a couple of wins with the girls inspired me to imagine what it could be like next season.

Every part of the weekend was a highlight for me: the dinners, sitting on the shore of Lake Moodamere  under the PHRC colours, arriving at the start line in a quad instead of a four, 2 days of 36 degrees, the post regatta swim.

But mostly, it was the incredible feeling of being back at PHRC with people who have now become my rowing family- sentimental I know!
