John Date Commemorative Row

Published Sat 27 May 2023

On Saturday 27th May 2023, a group of Power House Rowers hit the water to celebrate the legacy of a great bloke and former club member John Date who passed away last year.  Datey joined the club in 2004/2005 and together with Peter Leahy, Nick Freezer, Mike Taylor, Angelo Rizzardi and Peter Carew and rowed his first Head of the Yarra Rowing Regatta in 2005.

Datey represented the club as a rower and coach for over a decade and served on the committee. A wonderfully generous man who exhibited all the great qualities associated with Lord Summers Camp and Power House Rowing Club - honesty, integrity, loyalty and humility. Lord Somers would have approved!

To commemorate Datey, the 2005 Power House Rowing band got back together.... with a few changes. John’s son Henry rowed in his dad’s 7 seat whilst JOD filled in at 3 seat. John’s daughter Alice was the cox.

A big thanks to Springy for sorting out the compliance issues and cooking the bbq brunch. A huge thanks to Louise Date for helping turn a thought bubble at her husband’s wake, into a reality.
A wonderful tribute to the legacy of a wonderful bloke.
