Henley Rowing Regatta 2024

Published Fri 01 Mar 2024

Cate Brown learned to row with YWCA on Albert Park Lake when she was 16. YWCA did a call-out to girls schools to try rowing, and Cate and four school friends signed up. Two of the group (including Cate) have gone on to row since this introduction.

Prior to joining Powerhouse Rowing Club in 2023, Cate rowed for Potomac Boat Club in Georgetown Washington DC, where she was an active competitive member of its Senior Masters Women's squad and a member of the PBC Boat Committee.

On 24th February the Australian Henley Regatta was held on the Yarra.

I had never done the Henley whilst rowing in Melbourne many years ago, so I put my hand up to row in the Masters Women’s 8, which was my first regatta since returning to Melbourne and joining Power House late last year.  We had been living in Washington DC where I rowed with Capital Rowing Club and the Potomac Boat Club.

The Womens' 8 crew was a very experienced cox and group of rowers.  The final proved to be a close fight back and forth with MRC.  I am not sure if many of us knew whether we had won or not when crossing the line!

Not only did we have a win, we also got a splendid shiny Henley Challenger Women’s Masters 8 cup to hold, a Pimms (a welcome Powerhouse initiative), a short row home, no loading or unloading and a BBQ.  Thanks very much to the crew and Powerhouse Rowing Club for such a fun first regatta.
