As our membership base continues to grow, we asked some of our fresh faces to share how they’ve found joining, training, and racing with us at Power House

Karen and crew win bronze at the Victorian State Championships

“In January 2014, I was persuaded by Helen Menhennit to come and try rowing again after a break of some 27 years. I was quite apprehensive at first not knowing what to expect and hoped that muscle memory would kick in and that I at least stay upright and dry!
Of course Helen told me that it was just a social row – nothing too serious – just a few friendly races against each other. And she was right. It was a lot of fun.

However, after about three lots of 500 metre races later, my legs had that ‘out of body’ wobbly feeling that I’m sure rowers know only too well!
“Welcome back” they all said as I rested my weary legs and tried to eat a BBQ sausage.
I knew then that I was hooked….

So then I decided perhaps I could actually do this with a bit of training and moral support.
The girls and guys in the Squad were fantastic- all very helpful, encouraging and friendly. I was made to feel part of the team. So training began, and under Peter’s watchful eye we were soon off to Victorian State Titles where we brought home a bronze medal.
Then after lots more training, I competed at Adelaide Australian Masters Nationals regatta in numerous events and was very excited to receive a bronze medal. It was a great experience and a lot of fun to be away with everyone and I really enjoyed the camaraderie.

Overall, I have found PHRC to great club at every level – The facilities are amazing, the equipment is new and well maintained, training is organized and structured and the people are fantastic. I would like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank the Club President, all the committee members and also Club Captain Caitlin Ripper, Coach Peter Campbell for all their time and amazing efforts behind the scenes that makes this all happen.”

nationals. They love the PHRC staging!

“Why did we decide to join PHRC?
After research into various clubs in Melbourne I knew PHRC was the one for us when it had a proper stage – my ineptness in getting in and out of boats is legendary!
We’ve had different vocabulary and practices to get used to but erg training and tests are the same the world over!
Highlights for Ash have included Adelaide and coxing the F8+ over the winter.
Highlights for me have included shiny medal at Adelaide, the ‘training row’ at Adelaide and the despair in Pete’s voice at Geelong (you’re only rating 25!!)
I have achieved so many PBs since arriving and feel I have really come on as a sculler.
Everyone has made us feel very welcome.”

Welcome to the new PHRC website!
